Jasper Tyrell is the luckiest person in the world.
Tyrell is the protagonist in The Red Chancellor. He is an English traveler out for adventure in 19th century Germany. Through a first-person narrative, he takes us through mystery after mystery, fighting fights for his friends (and a beautiful woman) against tyrannical German leaders out to do them all harm.
Unfortunately, there is very little suspense. He doesn’t have to expend much intelligent effort to unravel the puzzles with which he is presented. Mostly through fluke, happenstance and pure luck, the answers simply present themselves. It’s as if Tyrell is playing a video game on the easy level.
As a result, this book is not that much fun. Go find a story where the hero may not be quite so lucky and must use his smarts from time to time.
