Genre: Fiction
If you loved Daphne du Maurier’s classic novel Rebecca, you may absolutely despise her last novel, Rule Britannia.
Published in 1972, her story describes a political merger of sorts between the United Kingdom and the United States that essentially evolves into an American invasion of Britain. Although some of her characters are developed nicely, in general, the Americans and British are portrayed as their common stereotypes—the Yanks are high-handed, boorish and rather dumb while the British carry on the stiff upper lip and stalwart resistance for which they are known.
Du Maurier’s writing style is as easy and pleasant as ever, but the fundamental story is senseless and the execution simply isn’t up to snuff.
Du Maurier wrote some classics during her career. Go read those instead.
