In 2007, Minotaur Books published Introducing Agatha Raisin, a compilation of author M.C. Beaton’s first two Raisin mysteries. If you wish to pursue a light reading series that stretches to 36 novels, this book is the place to begin.
Adapting to Retirement
Agatha Raisin has taken early retirement from a successful high-profile career. She’s moved to the English countryside as she’s dreamed of doing most of her life. But like so many, she learns that her work comprised more of her life and being than she realized. In short, she’s bored and with no apparent purpose. She needs a hobby. And investigating a couple murders in the neighborhood gives her something to occupy her time.
Along the way, she’s often irascible, mean, and discourteous to her new neighbors. Other times, she might be shy, weepy, depressed and lost. And in still other situations, she may be thoughtful, polite and charming. In essence, she’s like most ordinary people.
The Appeal of Agatha Raisin
Introducing the first two novels of the series—”The Quiche of Death” and “The Vicious Vet”—, this volume portrays Agatha’s transition to her new life as she becomes acquainted with her new community.
Beaton takes you along on Agatha’s often awkward investigations. She lets you see the clues at the same time Agatha discovers them. There will be times when you recognize the importance of a clue before Agatha does. In fact, you may even work out the solution before she does. But that’s part of the appeal of this book. It’s fun watching her work through her mistakes.
Introducing Agatha Raisin is an effective way to determine if you want to work in a Raisin novel from time to time. They’re certainly not on a level of Agatha Christie. But they are easy and witty reads that you’ll likely want to periodically place in your reading list.
